Conditions matter. Surfing and kayaking should be booked with a professional operator who can advise on tides, weather, equipment and suitability for beginners or children.
Surathkal Beach: coastline with a landmark
Surathkal is known for its lighthouse setting and broad coastal views. It can be an attractive late-afternoon stop, particularly for guests travelling towards Mangaluru. Lighthouse entry has specific visiting hours and can change, so confirm before you plan the day around going inside.
Tannirbhavi: a Mangaluru-side option
If your day already takes you into Mangaluru, Tannirbhavi offers a different option. Karnataka Tourism describes it as a quieter family-oriented beach with tree cover and a nearby tree park. It is better thought of as part of a Mangaluru city day than a quick Kinnigoli stop.
What about swimming?
Never assume that a calm-looking section of the Arabian Sea is safe for swimming. Conditions can change quickly, especially during monsoon periods. Follow local warnings, lifeguard instructions where present and the advice of trained activity operators. If in doubt, enjoy the beach from shore.
Choose one main coastal destination and one optional second stop. You will usually enjoy the coast more than if you spend the day driving between beaches.

If water sports are the priority, begin with a pre-booked Mulki session and keep Sasihitlu as the relaxed follow-on stop. If you are not doing activities, Sasihitlu followed by Surathkal can make a comfortable coastal outing. If you are heading into Mangaluru anyway, save Tannirbhavi for that city day.
